Sotheby’s set a new auction record in January for American silver when a punch bowl (pictured below) by Cornelius Kierstede, made in New York in the early 1700s, sold for a mind-blowing $5,906,500, more than 10 times its presale estimate at $400,000.

According to an article in Artdaily.org, that price is “more than seven times the previous record for American silver, and is the second highest price ever paid for any piece of silver at auction.”

Sotheby’s finished its Americana Week sales with a combined total of just over $15 million, giving hope to exhibitors at one of New York’s most prestigious antiques show, the Winter Antiques Show, which just finished up last weekend. (Stay tuned for more about that show in an upcoming post!)
