Southern Influences on Swedish Design

Often times, furniture and accessories from one country are influenced in some way by style originating from other countries, and this is certainly true of Swedish antiques. Last week, we discussed the Gustavian style, which drew ideas and inspiration from French furniture styles like Louis XVI and Rococo. Today, we’re going to take a look at some additional influences on Swedish design that originate from Sweden’s southern neighbors.

A few examples that we have on hand here at The Gables Antiques are the Chinese Export Platters shown below. While most Europeans were importing rather traditional motifs, such as pagodas and willow trees, the Scandinavians turned toward flowers.

Another fine example are these very colorful majolica plates. These plates are very similar to those found in England (first photo) and France (second photo), while other types of faience show the same kind of similarity.

Below are some images that show items similar to the ones we’ve shown you today in Swedish interiors. These images are from the book The Swedish Room by Lars and Ursula Sjoberg with photography by Ingalill Snitt. Aren’t they gorgeous?!

The Gables Antiques has a wonderful selection of Swedish antiques on hand. Check us out online or stop in at our store, which is located at 711 Miami Circle in Atlanta!
